IBAN/SWIFT/BIC Explained

Bank of Ireland IBAN Calculator

When making a domestic payment by credit transfer or direct debit:

  • BIC (Bank Identifier Code)
  • and
  • IBAN (International Bank Account Number)

have replaced the National Sort Code (NSC) and Account Number as the main payment identifiers for all SEPA payments.

You will need to become familiar with these key pieces of information. This is to make sure people can continue to make payments to you. Or so you can complete direct debit mandates for paying bills, like electricity or phone etc.

Your BIC and IBAN

You can find this information on the top right-hand corner of your account statement.

If you use our 365online service, please note that we have already updated the details for you. This means your existing payees have been converted for you with the correct details for payments within Ireland.

Your BIC

Your **BIC (Bank Identifier Code)** is the SWIFT Address that is assigned to a bank. This is in order to send automated payments quickly and accurately to the banks concerned. It uniquely identifies the name and country, and sometimes the branch of the bank.

BICs are often called SWIFT Codes and can be either 8 or 11 characters long.

Bank of Ireland’s BIC is **BOFIIE2D**

Understanding your IBAN

Your **IBAN (International Bank Account Number)** is a standard number used worldwide for your bank account. Banks use this number to clearly show which account belongs to which customer. It’s also the required way to identify accounts for all SEPA payments. It’s important to remember that your IBAN isn’t a new account number. Instead, it’s a new format for your existing account number. This allows other banks around the world to recognise it easily.

An example of an Irish IBAN, which contains your existing NSC & Account Number is: **IE64BOFI90583812345678**
