When you install the app on your Android phone, you’re shown a list of permissions that the app requests. The wordings for these permissions are created by Google. We cannot customise them So, to make clear what features we access and what data we collect, here’s a more detailed breakdown of the permissions you will be asked to allow.
Click on any of the permissions to link to Google’s official documentation for that permission.
Contacts
Why do you want to access my contacts?
Having access to your contacts means that Zippay can be used to make or receive payments and split bills with others who use Zippay.
Allowing access also means that you can share your BIC and IBAN in a text to any contact on your phone.
Bank of Ireland does not have access to your contacts or call details. The mobile banking app will not access your contacts unless you select the address book icon.
Location
Why do you want to access my location?
This permission allows us to show you the nearest ATM or branch, based on your location when using the app. It also allows us to send you location-based push notifications.
This does not store your location on your phone, but it does use the phone to pinpoint your location when you select the ATM or branch locator service.
Photos/Media/Files
Why do you ask for these permissions?
Our ATM or branch locator uses Google Maps to help you find those services nearby. Google Maps requires permission to save map data to your phone’s external storage (like an SD card). This allows the app to load maps faster without re-downloading them each time.
We may ask for your permission that looks like this:
'Photos/Media/Files'
This is only to allow Google Maps to save map data. We do not access your personal photos, media, or files.
Network access
Why do you ask for these permissions?
These are required to:
Connect to Bank of Ireland's servers.
Communicate with third-party services.
Download map and app data.
Additional:
Why do you ask for this?
This permission allows us to give better accuracy when you use Google Maps for our ATM or branch locator service. We use this permission to see if a Wi-Fi connection is available.
Why do you ask for this?
This allows the app to check if it can connect to our services and display appropriate messages if there is a connection issue.
Bluetooth Connection Information
Why do you ask for this?
In future features you may use Bluetooth to improve location accuracy or enable secure device pairing. The app does not use Bluetooth to access or share personal data at this time.
Bank of Ireland Mobile Banking App Bluetooth Permissions
Why do you ask for this?
This permission allows us to send you relevant or important information to your app. This is based on how near you are to a Bluetooth device called an iBeacon. For example, Bank of Ireland uses iBeacons in some branches. These are used to send push messages to customers.
Push notifications
Why do you ask for this?
This allows us to send you push notifications that improve your interactions with us. Push notifications also share important info with you about your banking actions. Confirming whether a card payment or a direct debit was made or rejected is an example of this. When you download or upgrade the mobile banking app we’ll ask you to allow these notifications.
