Gambling blocks for debit cards

Putting a gambling block on your debit card can help you take control of your finances. A block will stop transactions with gambling operators, including online casinos, betting shops (where you use your physical card in the shop), and lottery websites.

How does it work?

The block will stop any payments identified to us as being made to a gambling company. The following types of payments to gambling companies will not be authorised:

  • In-store and online transactions (excluding transactions made using Open Banking)
  • Chip and PIN, including contactless payments
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay.

However, if a company does not have a gambling-related code, we won’t be able to identify it and stop a payment.

How do I ask for a gambling block to be placed on my debit card?

You’ll need to give us the 16-digit card number of the card you want to put the block on.

It can take up to two business days for the gambling block to be applied to your card. We’ll text you to tell you when it’s working.

Please note: If you get a new card, we’ll automatically apply the gambling block – you don’t need to do anything. It may take up to two business days from when the new card is issued, for the block to be applied.
