If the incident involves fire, flooding, structural danger, or any other emergency, make sure everyone is safe and contact emergency services if necessary.Then, only if it’s safe to do so, take steps to prevent further damage, like turning off the water to stop a leak or temporarily covering broken windows.Step 2: Check your insurance policyReview your home insurance policy documents to understand what’s covered, if there’s an excess amount you need to pay upfront, and any other conditions you must meet to be able to make a claim. Step 3: Document the damageTake clear photos and videos of all affected areas and items. It’s also a good idea to make a list of all your damaged belongings. Be sure to take note of their approximate value and the date you bought them. Step 4: Gather all supporting informationDepending on your claim, you may need:Receipts or proof of ownershipRepair estimates from qualified tradespeopleA police report filed within 24 hours if the claim involves theft, attempted theft or vandalism.Step 5: Contact your insurance providerBe sure to notify us as soon as possible after the incident.For Intact Insurance policies, call 01 290 1958 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday). Press option 1 for claims.For emergency assistance (leaks, broken windows), call Intact on 1800 213 111 or FBD on 0818 432 323.Step 6: Submit your claimTo start a new home insurance claim, fill in an Intact household claim form or an FBD household claim form.The form will ask you for the key details needed to assess your claim, including:Your policy information - policyholder name, policy number, and contact details.Incident details - date, location, and a brief description of what happened.Property impact - whether the property is still habitable and what was damaged or lost.Item details - description of damaged items, including age, original cost, and estimated repair or replacement costs.Any additional relevant information you feel may support your claim.Step 7: Arrange an inspection or assessmentDepending on the claim, we may appoint a loss adjuster to inspect the damage. If we need to do this, we’ll also need you to be available to answer questions and provide details.Remember: Do not start any permanent repairs until the adjuster confirms it’s ok to proceed.Step 8: Review the outcome and complete repairsWe will assess all the information in your claim and give you a settlement offer. If anything seems incorrect or too low, you can query it before accepting.If you’re happy with the settlement quote, you can go ahead with full repairs.
