When your child is aged between 16 to 18, you have the option to move them from a parent or legal guardian-managed Smart Start Account to a child-managed Second Level current account.

You also have the option to move the money in their Smart Start Money Pot into an Instant Access Demand savings account, to continue their healthy savings habits into the future.

The best part is, we’ll manage the whole process for you from start to finish.


What is a Second Level current account?

The Bank of Ireland Second Level current account is a bank account designed for second level students up to age 20 who are in full-time, second level education.

No account maintenance fees

They won’t pay for everyday banking services like euro ATM withdrawals, euro debit card payments, direct debits, standing orders, or duplicate statements. View our Fee Information Document. You also don’t need to pay Government Stamp Duty on the debit card.1

Visa debit card access

A new Second Level debit card will be issued all students to replace their existing Smart Start Account debit card. They don’t need to pay Government Stamp Duty on the debit card.

Digital wallet

Supports Google Pay or Apple Pay for users aged 16 and over.

Easy everyday banking

They can enjoy contactless payments, ATM withdrawals, and the option to lodge and withdraw cash and cheques in almost 900 An Post offices nationwide.

Handy in-app banking

They can manage their account(s) on their smartphone or tablet using our 365 mobile app. They can set up direct debits and standing orders, send money to family and friends, or transfer money between their own accounts. Features like spending insights, card controls, and mobile-to-mobile payments also make managing money easy.

Advisor support

If they need help, they can speak with our team over the phone, in person at any of our 160+ branches nationwide, or using webchat.

Protected and secure

They have 24/7 fraud protection and their money is safe under the Deposit Guarantee Scheme for up to €100,000.

What is an Instant Access Demand savings account?

The Bank of Ireland Instant Access Demand savings account is just like a digital piggy bank that’s always accessible, but not too easy to raid. It helps students learn to save, budget, and plan ahead for short-term or long-term goals.

Who can apply?

To support your child’s move from a Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot to a new Second Level current account in their own name (and Instant Access Demand account if they choose one):

  • Your child must be aged between 16 and 18.
  • Your child must live in the Republic of Ireland.
  • You must own the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot with your child as a user. (It must be the same child you opened it for).

What do I need to apply?

What you’ll need:

  • Your 365 online user ID and registered mobile – if you’re not a 365 online user, you must have valid photo identification and take a selfie of you holding your identification document.
  • Your email address – we’ll use this to contact you.
  • Your Your Smart Start Account number, and Smart Start Money Pot account number (if you have one).

What your child will need:

  • Their mobile number.
  • Their email address.
  • Valid photo identification – the documents we accept include passport, driver’s licence card, or EU National ID card.
  • Proof of address – we only need this if your child’s address is different from your Smart Start Account. If they do not have proof of address in their own name, we can accept proof of address in your name if you live at the same address and they are aged under 18. Acceptable files must be .jpg, .png, .jpeg or .pdf format.
  • We will take a selfie of them during in the application journey.
  • Their Personal Public Service (PPS) number (only if opening an Instant Access Demand account).

Frequently asked questions


  • What happens when my child and I submit an application to move to a Second Level current account?

    When you submit your application:

    1. We’ll contact you and your child to let you know we are processing the application. The Smart Start Next Steps process takes up to 10 working days after you submit the application. (provided we have reviewed the full application successfully).
    2. We’ll send your child a new debit card and PIN for their new current account.
    3. We’ll send you a text to let you know when we have transferred any money to your child’s new Second Level current account, and Instant Access Demand if selected.
    4. We’ll send you another text to let you know when the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot are closed.

    Good to know:

    • ✔ You and your child can continue to use the Smart Start Account, and Smart Start Money Pot (if you have one) during the application.
    • ✔ We will not close the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot until we have transferred any remaining money to their new account(s).
    • ✔ You should take out any money you don’t want to transfer to your child before submitting the Smart Start Next Steps application form.
    • ✔ When the Smart Start Account closes, you will not be able to see any records in the app, like statements. You should download anything you need before you submit the application.
    • ✔ If you don’t complete the Smart Start Next Steps process by the time your child turns 18 we will close the account(s).

  • What fees are associated with the Second Level current account and Instant Access Demand savings account?

    With our Second Level current account, there are no fees for maintaining the account.

    There may be charges for things like Government Stamp Duty, and when you make international payments.

  • What do I do if my child doesn't want to open a new current account with Bank of Ireland?

    If your child does not want to open a new Bank of Ireland current account, or if they already have a current account in their own name with us or with another institution, you and your child do not have to complete the Smart Start Next Steps application process. However, you will still need to close the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot before your child turns 18.

    To do this:

    1. You will need to remove any money in the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot.
    2. Once the balance in the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot balance is zero, you can request to close the account(s) online or in branch.

  • What happens if my child already has Bank of Ireland current account in their own name?

    If your child already has a Bank of Ireland current account in their own name, you and your child do not have to complete the Smart Start Next Steps application process. However, you will still need to close the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot before they turn 18.

    To do this:

    Your child can transfer any money themselves to their existing sole current account in-app:

    1. They can transfer money from the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot into their Bank of Ireland current account using the ‘Transfer between my accounts’ option in the “Payments” section.
    2. Once the balance in the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot balance is zero, you can request to close the account(s) online or in branch.

    If you have a Bank of Ireland current account, you can do this yourself:

    1. Transfer money from your Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot into your Bank of Ireland current account.
    2. You can transfer any money you want your child to have by setting up an electronic payment. Add your child’s existing current account as a payee in the “Payments” section on the app.
    3. Once the balance in the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot balance is zero, you can request to close the account(s) online or in branch.

    Alternatively, we can support you and you child with the transfer of money and closure of accounts in branch.

  • Can my child continue to use their Smart Start Account past 18 if they need extra help?

    No, the Smart Start Account and Smart Start Money Pot are only available to children to use up to age 18. Once your child turns 18, as they are an adult, they can open an account in their sole name.

  • What happens if I don’t want my child to have access to the money in the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot after they move to their own current account?

    That’s fine, as the parent/legal guardian the money in the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot belongs to you. Simply transfer money out of the Smart Start Account/Smart Start Money Pot before you begin the application to move your child to their own current account.

    Your child will become the legal owner of any money that is transferred into your child’s Second Level current account, or Instant Access Demand if selected.

  • What happens if I'm no longer resident in Republic of Ireland?

    You can still complete the Smart Start Next Steps Process with your child as long as your child is Resident in Republic of Ireland.

  • How do I cancel a current account within my 14-day cooling off period?

    If you wish to cancel your account within your 14-day cooling off period, you can use our online withdrawal function. You will find this at boi.com/withdrawal along with further information on the steps required. You can also cancel the contract by sending a notice in writing to Bank of Ireland 365, P.O. Box 365, Dublin 24 quoting details of the account.
