  • Why do I need to regularly review my sums insured?

It’s important to regularly review your sums insured to ensure you have adequate insurance cover. Sum insured is the maximum amount paid by an insurer in the event of total loss, it is linked to the cost of repair/ replacement. If you have not updated your sums insured recently we urge you to take the opportunity to review this at renewal stage.

Remember the current replacement costs of a home in Ireland can vary based on location. The average rebuild cost of a 3 bed semi-detached under 100 sq/m varies from €2,055 to €735 per sq/m depending on location. We encourage you to visit ‘The Society Chartered Surveyors of Ireland (SCSI.ie) which contains advice on regional breakdown of rebuild costs. Home extensions and renovations will impact your premium.

If you have renovated your home or extended, you may need to increase your buildings or contents sum insured. Your contents sum insured should cover the cost of repairing or replacing personal belongings and household goods in your home. This includes items such as carpets, rugs, furniture and electronics. An easy way to calculate the value of your possessions is to go from room to room and add up how much it would cost to replace every item.
